Everything On: A Fully Loaded Pergola With Heat, Light & Rain Sensors

Some projects show what a louvered roof can do in isolation. This one, a walkthrough by Dana Shaw of a completed project built alongside builder partner Edgewater Development, shows what happens when the pergola is one piece of a larger backyard renovation — a full outdoor room built from what used to be an empty patch of dirt, in partnership with a local builder.

Classic Details: Pergola Pins and Recessed Lighting

As Dana opens the walkthrough: “we've got our motorized pergola in a way that made it classic in design, so we put these pergola pins on here.” The louver mechanism itself is the same motorized system used across Breslow's projects, but the pergola pins — a detail typically associated with traditional wood pergola construction — were added specifically to shift the finished look toward a classic aesthetic rather than a strictly modern one. Recessed lighting was built into the structure as well, keeping the ceiling line clean while still lighting the space after dark.

Heat, Airflow, and the Shadow-Line Effect

The system includes Infratech heaters and fans, and Dana calls out a detail specific to how the louvers themselves interact with light: “you'll notice this striping effect — I love that, you get that cool shadow line, whatever degree of sun you want, it just adds a real element of texture to a space.” Rather than a binary choice between full sun and full shade, adjusting the louver angle produces a partial-shade striping pattern across the patio — a look Dana treats as a feature in its own right, not just a byproduct of the mechanism. As he puts it: “I want to relax but I don't want the sun in my eyes, so I just sit here, I close those louvers and I've got full shade.”

Rain Sensors: No Guesswork

Consistent with every Breslow louvered roof, the system detects rain and closes automatically: “that's right, when it rains they'll detect rain, they'll close automatically.” It's the same functional core across every project in this cluster of walkthroughs — sun control on demand, and an automatic weather response that doesn't depend on anyone being home to react to it.

Working With a Builder Partner

What makes this project distinct is the collaboration behind it. Dana explains: “worked in collaboration with a company called Edgewater Development out of Greenwich, Connecticut — they're amazing, they did this entire patio, they did this outdoor kitchen, this fireplace, TV room, this island, that entire patio, the pool area.” Edgewater Development handled the broader hardscape and outdoor living build-out, while Breslow's team coordinated closely with them throughout: “every week we would talk about things and make sure that the wires are run properly, and then we come in and we put this beautiful maintenance-free aluminum motorized pergola.”

That weekly coordination — making sure electrical runs, footings, and sequencing all line up between trades — is a real part of how a project like this comes together on schedule. Dana's description of the site a year earlier makes the transformation clear: “when I was here about a year ago, this was just all dirt. Edgewater Development came in, leveled it all out, put in all this usable space so that their family can have the most incredible time.”
