One of the most common questions we hear during the consultation is: “How long does the whole thing take?” The honest answer depends on the project, but a typical residential Azenco R-Blade installation follows a predictable path from first call to final walkthrough.
Here’s the week-by-week breakdown of what to expect.
The Breslow Installation Timeline
-
Week 1–2
Design Consultation & Site Visit
We visit your property, study your home’s architecture, measure the space, and discuss your vision. This is where we determine which Azenco product system fits — R-Blade louvered roof, R-Shade screens, or both — and which architectural style (Transitional, Classic, Modern, or Custom) matches your home.
-
Week 2–3
Custom Design & Engineering
Our design team creates detailed 3D renderings showing exactly how the system will look on your home. For attached structures, we coordinate PE-stamped structural engineering to ensure the connection to your home meets or exceeds local building codes. You’ll approve the final design, color selections, and all accessories before we move forward.
-
Week 3–4
Permitting
We handle the full permit application with your municipality. This includes structural drawings, site plans, and any required documentation. Most residential permits in NJ, CT, and NY are approved within 1–3 weeks. Some towns require a zoning review, which can add a week.
-
Week 4–8
Manufacturing & Material Procurement
Your Azenco system is manufactured to your exact specifications — custom dimensions, chosen RAL color, and all integrated accessories. Simultaneously, we source custom Azek PVC trim materials that will be milled to match your home’s architectural details. Standard lead time is 3–5 weeks from order.
-
Week 8–9
Foundation & Site Preparation
If your project requires new footings, we pour them first and allow proper cure time. For deck-mounted systems, we reinforce the substructure as needed. Electrical rough-in for lighting, motors, and sensors happens at this stage.
-
Week 9–10
System Installation
The R-Blade structural frame goes up first, typically in 1–2 days. Then the louver blades, drive motor, and internal guttering are installed and tested. The custom Azek architectural trim wrapping follows — this is the detail work that makes a Breslow installation look like it was built with the house.
-
Week 10–11
Accessories & Automation
LED lighting, ceiling fans, infrared heaters, and motorized screens (R-Shade) are installed and wired. We program the Bond smart home bridge, set up the mobile app, calibrate rain and wind sensors, and run every system through a full test cycle.
-
Week 11
Final Walkthrough & Handoff
We walk you through every feature: how to operate the louvers, how the rain sensor works, how to control everything from your phone, and how to run the screens. You get a full maintenance guide and our direct contact for any future questions. Then we clean up and you enjoy your new outdoor room.
What Homeowners Are Surprised By
After hundreds of installations, here are the things clients consistently mention they didn’t expect:
- How quiet the motor is. The Azenco drive system operates at a whisper. Most homeowners can’t tell the louvers are moving unless they look up.
- How fast it drains. The integrated gutter system channels rain internally through the columns. There’s no visible gutter on the outside of the structure.
- How much they use it. We hear this constantly — families expect to use the pergola in summer and end up using it 8–10 months a year with the heaters and screens.
- The Azek wrapping detail. Until you see the custom trim in person, it’s hard to appreciate how much it changes the look. It’s the difference between “we added a pergola” and “it was always there.”
Preparing Your Property
Before our crew arrives, there are a few things that help the installation go smoothly:
- Clear the installation area of furniture, planters, and grills
- Ensure gate or side-yard access for material delivery (we need about 8 feet of clearance)
- Confirm the electrical panel has capacity for a dedicated 20-amp circuit (our electrician will handle the wiring)
- Let your neighbors know there will be some construction activity for 3–5 days
“The installation crew was incredibly professional. They protected our landscaping, cleaned up every day, and the whole thing was done faster than we expected.” — Jennifer P., Morristown, NJ
