The brief

The Hutchens family in Fall River, Rhode Island wanted an outdoor room that could hold up to coastal New England weather — full sun control in the summer, real protection from coastal storms, and a finish package built to resist salt air. The Bristol County brief called for a fully motorized louvered roof, weather automation, and a structural design rated for higher coastal wind loads.

The Build

We installed a custom Azenco R-Blade™ motorized louvered roof system, engineered for the specific exposure of this Fall River property. The aluminum R-Blade louvers rotate 90 degrees on demand so the family can shift between full sunlight, partial shade, or fully sealed weather protection — and an integrated rain sensor automatically closes the louvers the moment it detects precipitation, even when no one is home. The structure itself is rated for 165 mph wind loads, well above standard New England coastal building requirements.

"A custom AZEK wrap conceals the motors, sensor wiring, and mounting hardware behind clean architectural lines, while the marine-grade aluminum extrusions are designed to resist corrosion in coastal Rhode Island air.
