Don’t let the window treatment nightmare happen to you!
When people Google “what are window treatments?”, often they do so as a response to the confusion surrounding the fixtures and fittings included in their house purchase.
There seems to be some lack of understanding when it comes to this terminology. So imagine this. The contract has been signed and you’re just turning the key in the lock! What a day.
The boxes are in the hallway and you’re ready to start unpacking when the nightmare sets in. The window treatments are gone. OUCH! It’s one of those things a lot of new homeowners overlook in their contract… and the reason we get a lot of emergency calls for customized blinds.
So the beautiful arched window you admired so much when you were considering the house is now naked and something has to be done. You’re going to bleed energy, your house is exposed to the elements, not to mention the fact your privacy is seriously infringed.
The good news is there are tons of options and many are much more affordable than you’d imagine!
Typically, if you can remove window coverings by sliding them off a rod such as curtains or drapes, those window coverings are not considered a fixture. However, curtain rods, blinds, and window shades are fixtures.

So What Are Window Treatments Exactly?
What are window treatments – Hard treatments defined:
This category of window treatment is defined by the materials used, typically wood or vinyl. The following products are categorized as hard window treatments:
- Shutters: These stylish window treatments are built into your window frame. Adjustable horizontal slats give you control over how much light you let into a room. They’re usually made out of wood or a polyresin.
- Window Blinds: Typically blinds are made with louvers that allow you to adjust the amount of light you let into a room and work in a similar way to shutters without being built into the window frame. You can also pull them up so they don’t obstruct your view at all. Blinds are usually made out of wood, aluminum or fake wood.
What are window treatments – Soft treatments defined:
The following products are categorized as soft window treatments:
- Window Shades: Made out of fabric which rolls, stacks or folds to reveal your view. We have a wonderful array of materials, colors, and styles to choose from. I guarantee that Breslow Home Design Center will pinpoint something that perfectly matches your home. We have solutions to fit every situation. Some shades block the light entirely, some are semi-sheer for more light, while others even have a “view through” system that is built similarly to blinds.
- Curtains & Draperies: This category is self-explanatory. Call Breslow Home Design Center today to schedule an appointment to check out our beautiful collection today!
Types of Window Treatments Available from Hunter Douglas
So if you’re looking for window treatments you really need to stop and consider your space, the size, and shape of your windows AND your personal goals. There’s a lot to think about, friends.
That’s why we schedule personal consultations with our clients because there’s no one-size-fits-all sort of advice you can rely on when it comes to selecting the right window treatments. Light, privacy, views and personal style are just a few of the considerations we go through. So let’s see what Hunter Douglas has to offer right now. I think you’ll be surprised by their vast selection!
Sheers & Shading
Silhouette Window Shades
Silhouette Shades are created from soft adjustable fabric and have been providing light diffusing options for over 25 years. The s-shaped vanes look like they’re floating between two sheer fabric panels. If you’re looking to mute harsh sunlight this may be the right choice for you. This is also a kid and pet-friendly option because there are no cords or tapes.
Check it out! There a few variations of this product that may interest you:
- Silhouette ClearView: Combines front and back sheers for a superior view-through effect.

You can choose semi-opaque and room darkening fabrics which give you control over the atmosphere.
Luminette Window Shades
Now, this is the option for you if you have wide windows or sliding doors! I’m also happy to report that Luminette Privacy Sheers come in a vast array of drapery-like fabrics that offer unlimited light-control and privacy options. Hunter Douglas Manual Operating Systems
Ok, now that you know what sort of style options are available for your window coverings we can move on to how they operate! What you select has everything to do with your personal living situation, budget, the design of your house and practical issues such as privacy. Not everyone wants to achieve the same atmosphere! If you have expansive ocean views chances are you want something VERY different from an urban dweller who has neighbors and a view of an alley!
Here are some of the choices you’ll have to navigate when you purchase your shades:
- manual systems
- cordless systems
- loop operation
- motorized systems that use radio waves
There are pros and cons for each method. As you can imagine if you have small children or animals motorized systems are the safest because cords and pulleys are eliminated. Also if your ceilings are high or you’re covering a skylight it makes no sense to maintain a manual system.
Let’s check out what Hunter Douglas has to offer right now because there are a lot of things to consider! Also if you’re looking for “custom window treatments near me” you’ve come to the right place! Call us today!
Operating Systems for Horizontal Window Treatments
The Standard Cordlock system has a locking mechanism to control the position of the shade and comes with cord cleats for enhanced child and pet safety.
This is the original Hunter Douglas system.
Ultra Glide System
This simple operating system features a single retractable cord or wand. The main selling point is the cord or wand never lengthens which protects children and pets.
This is a cordless system that allows you to push your shades up with your hands. It’s easy, light and works great for people with young children or pets.
The SimpleLift system is a cordless, child and pet-friendly option. You can effortlessly operate your shades by raising and lowering the bottom rail to any position. Motorized options are also available so you can operate this system with the push of a button.
Top Down Bottom Up
This operating system offers you the ability to open and close your window treatments from the top down, bottom up, or in combination.
You can use this system with:
- Roman shades
- Cellular honeycomb shades
- Pleated shades
- Woven wood shades
It can also be paired with PowerView Motorization.
Cordless Lifting System
This Cordless lifting system works well for Roller Shades and Designer Screen Shades. It’s a traditional spring-assisted system that raises and lowers large window coverings. If you have kids or pets it’s a terrific option.
The EasyRise continuous cord loop system allows you to raise, adjust and lower your shades by simply pulling on the cord. A continuous cord loop returns back to the headrail, creating an endless cord. This system is perfect for large window treatments and those with kids and pets.
Clutch Operated Continuous Loop System
The clutch-operated continuous cord loop is constructed from a beaded pulley that connects into a rotating clutch that opens and closes the shade. From a fully opened position, you can close the shade by pulling down on the front half of the loop. You can open the shade by pulling on the rear of the continuous loop.
Another great option is, you can pair two fabrics of varying opacities on one cassette for optimum light control and an intriguing layered effect. This is another good child and pet-friendly option.
This system allows you to control light exposure by using two separate fabric panels in one single shade. These window treatments can be configured in a variety of open and closed positions to help you customize light and privacy.
There’s a wide range of manual and motorized operating systems available. Please call Breslow Home Design Center today.
The LightLock system is available with Duette Honeycomb Shades. Their unique U-shaped side-channel system features rows of specially shaped micro-ridges, optimized to absorb or deflect incoming light.
LightLock blends seamlessly into your window frame to prevent light leakage. Operating systems available are LiteRise and PowerView Motorization.
Operating Systems for Vertical Systems
This cordless system works great for sliding glass doors and is child-safe. VertiGlide is available for Duette, Applause and Honeycomb Shades.
You may select manual operation or PowerView Motorization.
Combination Wand/Cord Control
A Combination wand/cord called The PermaTilt Wand Control system provides a single control to traverse and rotate vertical vanes and louvers.
The standard chain and cord are completely eliminated which makes this a safer alternative for children and pets.
Hunter Douglas wand control eliminates looped pull cords completely.
They are replaced with a wand that remains safely out of your child’s or pet’s reach.
Chain and Cord
This traditional chain and cord system is used on vertical blinds. To operate the blind you pull the chain to rotate the vanes and pull the cord to traverse the blinds.
If you select Duette Honeycomb Shades you can choose this operating system. It works very well for European style tilt-turn windows because your shades stay in place whether your window is closed, tilted or turned. It also works well for French doors. TrackGlide and LiteRise operating systems are also available.
Operating Systems for Shutters
If you have large windows or sliding glass doors the Bi-Fold Track System may be for you. It allows up to six panels to be hinged together. The Panels are connected to a top track which guides their folding movements.
If you like shutters you can use the Bypass Track System which allows shutter panels to slide past each other on top tracks. This system works well for sliding glass doors. There is also a Bypass Open Louver system, which allows the louvers to remain open while sliding or stacking. If you have a panoramic view this may be a good option for you.
This is another option for shutter products providing a classic plantation look consisting of panels that are hinged to a frame or window opening. If your windows are wide, extra vertical posts called T-posts, can be built into the shutter frame allowing for additional panels giving you more design flexibility.
Front Tilt Bar
This standard system is used to open and close shutters. A traditional tilt bar is located on the front center of the shutter panel connecting the louvers to one another so you can control privacy and light exposure.
Truview Rear Tilt
This is another system you can choose if you opt for shutters. It’s barely visible from the front which provides a sleek contemporary look. To open and close the shutters, simply tilt one louver to the desired position, and the rest will follow.
If you purchase the following shutters this option is available:
- Palm Beach
This system completely eliminates the traditional tilt bar. A patented gear-driven system gives you one-touch control and an unobstructed view.
Operating Systems for Skylights
SkyLift Skylight Systems
The SkyLift skylight system is available for the following honeycomb shades:
You can choose between:
- PowerView Motorization
- Manual operation with a hand crank
- Telescoping pole for hard-to-reach windows
Simplicity Skylight System
The Simplicity skylight system is available when you purchase Applause Honeycomb Shades. It’s a manual operating system that you can use on any slope or orientation. Fabric stacks at the top, bottom, left or right side. If you have windows that measure more than 48 square feet, the side-by-side mounting allows for more coverage.Schedule a Free Consultation
Hunter Douglas Motorized Operating Systems
Ok now that you’ve reviewed all the manual options that Hunter Douglas has to offer, maybe you’ve decided that a motorized system makes more sense for you and your family. We see this all the time at Breslow Home Design Center. It’s hard to pass up some of these awesome add-ons.
There really is something to be said for setting it and forgetting it. It’s also a nifty tool if you travel a lot or are particularly concerned about your energy consumption.
One of the things I love the most about our business is that we’re always evolving. Each year, interior and exterior home design become more sophisticated, and window treatments are no exception.
Did you know windows used to be standard rectangles and arches? This is all changing and we’re increasingly seeing circular and trapezoid shapes that are placed in areas that are tough to get to. Which sets the bar higher for the companies that manufacture shades, blinds, and shutters.
Energy efficiency offered by smart shades are driving the demand for smart shades devices to manage temperature and decrease the amount of light. With new and advanced commercial and residential construction across various countries, the adoption of smart home devices is increasing, thereby, driving the demand for smart shades devices.Digital Journal, Smart Shades Market Devices Driven by Growing Focus on Energy Efficiency
Homeowners also want ease and simplicity when it comes to insulation, light and privacy controls. Motorization allows you to set all of this with a touch of a button. Let’s take a look to see what Hunter Douglas has to offer right now!
The PowerView Motorization system is the recipient of the 2018 Red Dot Design Award, the most coveted and prestigious designation in the world of design. It allows you to program your window treatments to the exact position you want throughout the day.
Not to mention the fact that everything can be scheduled through your intuitive PowerView App, the PowerView Pebble Control, or with voice commands using devices from Amazon.
Since we get asked often about how to replace the batteries on Hunter Douglas PowerView window treatments, we thought you would enjoy this video which shows you step-by-step instructions:
SoftTouch Motorization is a battery-powered system that’s operated with a wand. Pulling down on the wand lowers your shades and pushing it up raises them. If you have children or pets this is a terrific system because there are no cords.
Motorized Operation System for Vertical Blinds
If you have vertical blinds this system rotates your vanes to any angle with the touch of a button. You can also add a feature to traverse the vanes. This system can be operated remotely or through a wall mounted system.
How Much Do Window Treatments Really Cost!
Now that you know what’s available, we can move on to the brass tacks of cost. Unfortunately, I think, for the most part, window treatments have a reputation for being an expensive purchase. That being said, there’s a range of price points offered. Sure you can buy some inexpensive window coverings online… but you can also buy fantastic custom built window treatments even if you aren’t wealthy.
For example, if you’re looking to purchase shades Hunter Douglas offers a number of options to fit your budget:
- Applause: These shades are made from good quality materials and offer a variety of patterns. They also come with a reasonable price tag.
- Duette: Check out their honeycomb collection. These shades come in a dazzling array of fabrics with a variety of inventive add-on options to choose from. Their price tags range from low to high depending on what you select.

Window Treatments Checklist
Determine What Your Needs Are
Not too long ago windows were covered with a feed sack, quilted fabric or whatever a pioneer could find to keep the elements out. Today, window treatments are an integral part of your décor. That’s why it makes sense to have a professional come out to your home to assess your needs.
At Breslow Home Design Center we make this possible. We offer free window treatment consultations at your home, office or in one of our showrooms.
During this consultation, we consider:
Window treatments can literally transform the entire concept of your home. What sort of environment do you want to live in? The amount of light can change everything.
Set Your Budget
We sell window treatments to fit every budget. For example, if you’re looking for less expensive window coverings you may want to consider Hunter Douglas pleated shades… but if money isn’t an issue and design is a priority you may want to consider Designer Roller Shades.
The thing is there is something for everyone and we’re happy to steer you in the right direction. At Breslow Home Design Center the most important message we want to get across is custom window treatments don’t have to break the bank.
Before we close this section out, it’s important to add one caveat. Remember this is a long term commitment. You don’t want to cut costs here to the point where you purchase something you’re not happy with.
At the end of the day, you do get what you pay for. So although a shade system like the Duette Architella may be more costly, you’ll cut your energy bills and you will love them for years to come. Which actually may save you time, money and annoyance in the long run.
Speaking Of Money: Remember You’ll Cut Your Energy Bills
No matter what type of window treatment you select you’ll cut down your energy costs! They provide adaptive insulating layers that keep out heat and cold regardless of the season.
One of our favorite picks for window treatments is honeycomb shades. They provide superior insulation with high R-values. If you’re wondering what an R-Value is, you’re not alone. It’s a measure of the resistance an insulating material offers to heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation. Some Hunter Douglas shades have an R-value as high as 7! The newest line of Duette honeycomb shades is called Architella and its insulating technology is as powerful as many products used in your walls.
Not only are honeycomb shades beautiful, sophisticated and energy efficient but they can be customized for irregularly shaped windows. Now, how’s that for flexibility?
Hunter Douglas window treatments that work well for insulation are:
- Vignette Modern Roman Shades
- Luminette Privacy Sheers
- Pirouette Window Shades
- Duette Architella
If you really want to maximize your energy efficiency we recommend installing motorized blinds. These “smart” shades open and close to control the temperate of your house.
What more could you want? Your window treatments are environmentally friendly, cut down your energy bills and add serious style.
Nail Down Your Decorating Style
It’s important to really sit down and think about what sort of environment you want to achieve before you buy your window treatments. After all your home is your refuge. Are you into American folk arts and antiques or maybe art deco?
To address this consideration, we typically recommend that you use a style expert like those at Breslow Home Design Center to help you work through your goals. You can transform your living space into a sophisticated oasis or a rustic abode with a little forethought… and your window treatments will bring everything together for you.
As I previously mentioned lighting and privacy are big considerations. With the right shades, blinds or shutters you can create a space that has soft light or a blackout effect for a good night’s sleep. There really is no end to how you can use your window treatments to accent your space.
Our best advice is to take some time to do this. This isn’t an inexpensive investment and chances are you will be using them for decades to come.
Don’t Forget To Bring Nature Into Your Home
Customized windows are very popular today. They can even make or break your decision to buy a home. Windows impart character and alter the vibe depending on what you do with them. One of the most important goals for homeowners is maximizing the strong points of their property.
If you have incredible mountain views, chances are you want to take advantage of them. That’s why you bought the house, to begin with. Right? As with anything, there is always a downside. Maybe you have hikers walking past your property through an easement, so you still want some privacy. What better way to solve this issue than installing customized window treatments?
The right pick can bring nature right into your home, provide you with privacy and create an air of sophistication! Remember, there is a huge selection of window treatments to consider and they all fit different circumstances. That’s why you need to speak to the professionals at Breslow Home Design Center to find out which window treatments work best for you.Schedule a Free Consultation
Materials Are Important
Did you know the material you select has as much to do with setting the tone of your space as the type of window treatment you purchase?
Think about it! If you just bought a lovely contemporary home with tall ceilings and sweeping views, it’s very unlikely that you’ll select shutters to achieve your design goals. The heaviness of the wood and the obstructed view just don’t fit. My guess is that you may purchase something like motorized Roman Blinds in a gorgeous linen fabric.
On the other hand, maybe you want a seriously modern feel, but you live in the city so privacy is an issue. Maybe you’ll select Modern Precious Metal Blinds with the De-Lite add-on. As you can see the materials used make a huge difference in the feel of the space.
You also have to consider practical matters. Kitchens and bathrooms require materials that are moisture and heat resistant (see photos from a Chatham NJ bathroom installation of Hunter Douglas Palm Beach Shutters). They also have to be easy to clean and maintain. Elegant natural materials may seem like a good fit but sometimes manmade materials make more sense because of their resilience and affordability.
In fact, manmade materials have come a long way. Faux wood, wood composites, vinyl polysatin are offered in a wide range of combinations that may work perfectly for your décor. The latest materials are manufactured using technology that blocks heat, moisture, and light. A good example of this would be our NewStyle Hybrid Shutters. They are beautiful and work perfectly if you live in a hot humid area as they won’t fade or peel.
Breslow Home Design Center offers a wide array of materials that include:
- Faux Wood
Don’t Forget About Your Kids & Pets
If you have kids and/or pets then you need to read this section! Shopping for the perfect window treatments is now more complicated for you because not all products are appropriate for your circumstances… and there are a number of factors for you to consider.
First and foremost choking is an issue if you have blinds or shades with cords. Sadly there have been many such accidents, so we highly recommend purchasing a cordless system if you have concerns here.
The next issue is pet damage. Let’s face it, Spot wants to look out the window even if your shades or blinds are shut. So he launches himself at your metal blinds and they are dented for life. The same holds true for that natural grass shade. Chloe the cat is now using it as a scratching post.
